Kimberly Hennessy

About me

My name is Kimberly Hennessy and I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work (MSW). After completion of my MSW, I completed additional training following the guidelines of the German Association for Systemic Therapy, Counseling and Family Therapy. I am able to provide counseling services for individuals, couples as well as families, based on systems theory that focuses on how an individual’s personal relationships, behavior patterns, and life choices are interconnected with the issues they face in their life.

I am also certified as a Mediator for family conflicts that can facilitate the communication between couples following separation. Family Mediation may be quicker, more cost-effective and less stressful than heading to court for your separation or divorce, ensuring your family stays in control of arrangements over children, property and finance.

I have more than 15 yrs of counseling experience working with adults, children, couples and families while living in the US and in Germany. Thus, I am familiar with crossing transatlantic borders and the challenges that this may bring along, having to adapt to new cultural norms.

I am a mother of two children, fluent in German and in English, based in the Frankfurt area. I am able to offer online counseling services as well as on site in my private practice.

I would be happy to provide counseling for:

Individuals:

In order to assist you in learning about your moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviors, exploring interpersonal and internal conflicts. I will explore the interrelatedness of your current relationships, belief systems and family history in order to see how certain patterns have emerged in your life and may now be limiting your future options. Counseling can help you take control of your life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills.

Couples:

In order to assist with strategies and learning skills to build a closer and happier relationship, to improve communication skills, problem- solving skills, help clarify relationship roles, assist with intimacy issues, help partners deal with life transitions and rebuilding trust.

Families:

In order to assist with situations such as adjusting to new life changes, conflicts between family members, parenting issues, divorce and separation, communication problems, mental illness, domestic abuse and effects of trauma. Any family, at any stage of life, who would like someone to help them talk about difficult things together in a way that’s safe, open, creative and useful.

Mediation

Parenting Issues such as :

  • When and where the children will spend time with each of you
  • Agreeing on child maintenance and support payments
  • Arrangements for school holidays and key events such as Christmas, Birthdays, etc.

Financial and property issues such as :

  • How your assets will be divided
  • What happens to your family home, including who will move out and when this will happen
  • Spousal maintenance
  • How many upcoming bills will be settled?

Family Mediation is much quicker, less stressful, and usually cheaper than heading straight to court. Mediation allows families to keep control of their own destinies and shape long-term solutions that are in your family’s best interests.

My non-judgmental and strength-based approach is rooted in the systems theory. Therefore, my techniques include circular questioning, conceptualization, reframing, and using genograms and ecomaps to better understand how and when behavioral patterns have emerged in life. I also draw from cognitive-behavioral and trauma-based approaches.
